2020 was the year when businesses of all kinds were forced to go online. Whether you have a grocery shop or even a small t-shirt making business, just marketing locally isn’t sufficient anymore. Yes, COVID-19 of course played a huge role in this transition from offline to online space. But frankly speaking, this change was in the making for a long time. Two years have passed since. Unless you have adjusted to the eCommerce format already, you are essentially leaving money on the table.

Ecommerce marketing strategies are both very similar and dissimilar to regular marketing strategies. The core principles, of course, remain the same. People will still be enticed by offers and will take urgent action when faced with statements like “Hurry! Only 1 piece left.” But there are certain special benefits that you get while doing eCommerce marketing.

The first and most important advantage is that eCommerce marketing can be practiced by anyone. This is exactly why a lot of new businesses with very little capital are not only popping up everywhere but also prospering in their new online space. Email marketing takes a fraction of what TV or radio ads cost. This is exactly why small businesses have been able to legitimately compete with bigger brands. eCommerce marketing has democratized the playing field.

Also, it is much easier to track the impact of your online marketing campaigns. For example, you can easily find out how an ad is performing by checking the Click Through Rate (CTR) of that ad. So, you can pull any ad down immediately if you see that it is performing badly.

In this article, I will focus on some eCommerce marketing strategies that aren’t just easy to implement but also affordable.

10 Ecommerce Marketing Strategies for 2022 Which Have Been Proven to Increase Your Sales:

1. Link-Building

Let’s get something straight- if your site is stuck on the second or third page of Google, you won’t be getting customers.

Your products need to show up when people search for them. This is why a high rank in the Search Engine Result Page (SERP) is crucial. But how does Google (the search engine most people use) rank sites?

This is based on hundreds of factors but a very important factor that Google has always valued is- backlinks. When other sites link back to your content, these links are called backlinks.

Previously, only the number of backlinks mattered. But now, Google also values the quality and relevance of backlinks. So, getting high-quality backlinks from trusted blogs and websites has to be your top priority if you are practicing eCommerce marketing.

2. Focus on Content

How do you get backlinks? Primarily through content. This is exactly why B2B sites all have dedicated content designing teams that focus on producing quality content that is also relevant. Once you have produced this content, you need to market it to other hosting sites that can offer you backlinks. There are plenty of strategies for this in Digital Marketing. Check out Brian Dean’s (founder of Backlinko) Skyscraper Technique, for example.

While creating this content, remember this crucial fact- you must only create what others are searching for. That is, your content has to solve a problem that is currently extremely relevant. The answer has to be in high demand. This is why all content writing teams focus on the hottest keywords. To figure out the most relevant questions that need answering, you can use Google tools like “Answer the Public” or “People Also Ask”. These are great ways to find out long-tailed keywords.

3. Social Proof

Do you ever buy from a site that has no reviews? Of course not. This is exactly why you should strive to display as many reviews as possible. Customers have every reason to trust other customers more than they trust you- the business owner. This is exactly why you should do everything to obtain social proof.

Several businesses offer discounts in exchange for reviews. Offering free deliveries or next-day deliveries on the next order in exchange for reviews is always a good idea.

Also, don’t be scared of bad reviews. Their presence only proves that you haven’t flooded your site with paid reviews. They add credibility to the other good reviews.

4. User-Generated Content

If you are a new business owner, you probably don’t have the funds to hire influencers. But, there’s a way better option that you can implement instead. User-generated content is pretty similar to a review. Users post photos or videos with your products completely unprompted. All you need to do is ask them to tag your eCommerce business in their social media posts.

If you are familiar with Instagram, you will know that this is enough to create an entire page full of user-generated content. When others click on the tag, they will see hundreds of such photos or videos featuring your product. This is how hotels and restaurants practice digital marketing as well. Did you know that GoPro is a company that completely depends on user-generated content as its e-marketing strategy?

Their website and social media profiles are full of videos shot by people all over the world with their own GoPros. This gives them a range of content that they would never have been able to film artificially. This also indicates that they have to spend almost nothing on their marketing budget. Plus, potential customers are way more likely to trust these videos than anything shot by professionals as an advertisement.

5. Remarketing

There are various stages of a sales funnel and not everyone who enters comes out through the other end. Some enter the funnel but simply bounce back and leave again. These are the exact people that you should be targeting during your eCommerce marketing campaigns. Retargeting and remarketing are not only more effective but way more economical. And you should always keep your Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) in mind while marketing.

Google Pay Per Click (PPC) ads cost a lot. But did you know that the remarketing ads only cost a fraction of the original value? And it’s not just about the money. A retargeted customer is way more likely to buy your product. They already know about your business since they have crossed the Awareness Stage before. All they need to do now is decide whether or not they want to buy the product. Remarketing makes re-targeted customers slide straight to the Decision Stage of the Sales Funnel.

6. Email Marketing

Did you know that none but email marketing has the highest ROI? This is mostly because email marketing costs a fraction of what PPC ads and Social Media ads cost.

Consider Mailchimp for example. If you have less than 2000 subscribers, you can pretty much use their services for free. And even when you have to pay for it, it’s pretty cheap compared to other marketing options.

Email marketing campaigns usually work out very well. This is because most people have to mandatorily check their emails every day. The click-through rate of email ads is much higher than that of Facebook ads. Plus, email marketing campaigns are extremely easy to set up.

7. Social Media Marketing

This is one of the more expensive options, yes. But you cannot avoid it if you have a millennial or Gen Z target audience. People spend a lot of time on social media, which automatically makes it one of the best places to advertise your products. Remember to be creative and also make sure you choose the right social media platform for marketing. If your product needs a more visual base, go with Instagram. If the content is your forte, go with Facebook or Twitter.

8. Local SEO & Geofencing

If you have a business that caters to local customers only, boosting your local SEO is a must. Your business needs to show up both on Google and Google Maps when someone uses the keywords “nearby” or “near to me.” To do this, you need to create a Google My Business account.

Also, make sure you utilize voice search keywords more than regular keywords. People who Google local businesses tend to do so over voice search normally. So go for the larger question keywords like “What are the best cafes near me?” rather than short-tailed keywords.

Geofencing is another piece of digital technology that can be used to increase the sales of restaurants, cafés, bars, and other businesses that only serve customers in a particular location.

Geofencing will allow you to target past customers for advertising, whenever they enter the area in which your business is located. Thus, if a customer from a different city has patronized your café once before, you can use geofencing to offer them discounts whenever they are in town and the vicinity of your café.

9. Polls, Contests, and Giveaways

Create content that the audience can participate in. For example, Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) often send their customers online quizzes with beautiful pictures and questions like- “Where would you like to travel next?” The answer to this question not only serves as valuable data to store away, but the audience participation itself tells you the number of active responders you have.

Polls, contests, and giveaways encourage customer participation. This serves two other purposes:

1. You get a bit of free advertising. You can ask the customers to post a photo of your product and tag you to participate in the giveaway.

2. You understand who your top customers are. This helps you in segmenting your customer base so that you can practice targeted marketing and build loyalty programs.

10. Create Visual Content

People have short attention spans. Even if you are creating blogs, try to use more infographics than plain writing. Infographics also work brilliantly in social media ads.

Also, focusing on video content is a great idea. Youtube is a social media site that many businesses have already taken to for eCommerce marketing. But videos function as excellent content too. They are much easier to view and understand than regular written content.

Plus, they get you loads of backlinks because not all websites have enough expertise to create videos. They will simply link back to you if you manage to create good content. Creating videos is also great for search engine optimization.
